IP Australia publishes 100-year IP dataset
IP Australia has unveiled 100 years worth of data on IP rights applications, in what it says is the office’s “most significant” update to its dataset to date.
The update, published this week, is the latest edition of the office’s IP Government Open Data (IPGOD2020).
According to the national IP office, the data structure has been “completely revised”, allowing users to access combined data across patents, trademarks, designs, and plant breeders’ rights.
IP Australia is also working on further improvements to the system, to be published later this year, focused on improving its “research potential”. These will include tables to answer common research questions.
The updated IPGOD2020 provides more “historical coverage” than previous editions, the office said, allowing users to track the history of IP transfers and exchanges across time.
The office earlier this week announced that it had teamed up with Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) on a blockchain app designed to eliminate the spread of counterfeit goods.
As part of a trial, IP Australia’s “trust badge” will be applied to the NRL’s official online merchandise stores.
The badge acts as a “digital stamp of authenticity”, linking the online store to the brand’s registered trademark. The trial comes under IP Australia’s ‘Smart Trade Mark’ platform, which allows trademark owners to register online to prove they are the authentic owner of a particular brand.Elsewhere, IP Australia is collaborating with the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation to develop a system of traceability and verification for bush-food supply chains.
