Iancu sworn in as USPTO director
Andrei Iancu was sworn in as director of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on Friday, February 23.
Iancu, who formerly served as managing partner of Irell & Manella’s Los Angeles office, was nominated by US President Donald Trump in August 2017. He was confirmed by the US Senate in early February.
“Working with those who come before this agency, we must foster a culture of innovation that promotes the progress of science and useful arts, spurs investment, creates new jobs, grows our economy, and helps us achieve our highest ideals,” said Iancu, in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony.
He added that the office must endeavour to provide “reliable, predictable, and high-quality IP rights” that give IP owners and the public confidence in those rights.
Back in November, Iancu vowed to make clarity on section 101 a priority, after admitting the USPTO could to do more in this area.
As reported by WIPR, fee diversion is one of the main problems facing the agency, as USPTO fees are diverted to other functions within the Department of Commerce.
