INTA elects David Lossignol as 2019 president
The International Trademark Association (INTA) has elected David Lossignol, of pharmaceutical company Novartis, as its 2019 president.
Lossignol, who is head of trademarks, domain names and copyrights for Novartis, in Switzerland, has taken up the volunteer role at INTA after serving on its board of directors since 2013.
He will replace Tish Berard, who served as INTA’s 2018 president and is legal counsel for North America at Velcro.
Before joining Novartis, he was the global head of trademarks for pharmaceutical company Sandoz International, where he led a team of trademark professionals.
During his one-year term as president, Lossignol plans to advance the protection of IP across the world through education. The main issues he hopes to address include the proliferation of counterfeiting, growing anti-IP sentiment, brand restrictions and the future of IP rights under Brexit.
“I am honoured to have this opportunity to lead INTA at a time when brand owners are facing both enormous challenges and exciting changes,” Lossignol said. “I plan to tackle some of these issues through a business-oriented angle and positive approach, including emphasising how brands can better society.”
INTA’s CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo noted that the association is expecting a productive year ahead and looks forward to the “knowledge, passion, and vision” that Lossignol will bring to his leadership role.
“As an active member of INTA and an experienced IP professional, he fully recognises the best interests of our global membership and the priorities the association needs to address in the global economy,” Sanz de Acedo added.
