Coca-Cola appoints new general counsel

Coca-Cola has hired Monica Douglas as its new senior-vice president and general counsel, replacing Bradley Gayton in the role less than a year after he joined the company from Ford.

Douglas has worked at Coca-Cola for 17 years, having joined the company in 2004 as senior managing counsel. She also acted as legal director of Coca-Cola South and East Africa before being appointed general counsel for Coca-Cola North America from September 2017.

In her new role, Douglas will oversee the company’s global legal function and report directly  to chairman and CEO James Quincey.

“Monica is an outstanding legal leader who has deep experience working across our company and system,” Quincey said. “She will oversee the continued evolution of the legal function at the company while also serving as a valued voice in helping lead our overall business.”

Prior to joining Coca-Cola, Douglas was an attorney at Equifax and associate at Troutman Sanders—now Troutman Pepper.

Douglas succeeds Bradley Gayton, who will be transitioning to a strategic consultant position according to a separate announcement made on the same day.

Gayton was general counsel at the company for only eight months before being appointed strategic consultant to the chairman and CEO.

While in the GC role, Gayton announced in February that Coca-Cola will withhold a nonrefundable 30% of fees from law firms that fail to meet its new diversity requirements.

“It has been a privilege to do such important work with my amazing colleagues in the legal department and to be part of Coca-Cola’s dynamic leadership team,” Gayton said. “I look forward to working with James in this new strategic role.”
