Future of IP highlights: Sun World’s agri-IP strategy, GenAI's copyright T&Cs, the music rights revolution

WIPR’s March Focus is underway, with a new content hub offering deep dives into what the future holds for intellectual property's people, technology and rights owners.

This week marked the launch of WIPR’s first-ever Focus month, offering news, features and interviews on the Future of IP.

During the month of March, the new ‘Focus on IP’ content hub will offer stories about the innovations of tomorrow, the professionals who are doing things differently and the key issues across the spectrum of global IP.

The first week kicked off with the ‘AI poisoning’ tools trying to disrupt GenAI; an interview with the vice president of IP at global plant grower Sun World; and fashion’s forward-looking lawyers.

On Tuesday WIPRlooked at how AI is changing the work of IP juniors; and asked whether the Unified Patent Court is a new feeding ground for non-practising entities.

On Wednesday, we discovered how the likes of Swift, Springsteen and Bieber are cashing in on a music rights revolution; and learned of the five emerging tech trends that are shaping IP.

And yesterday, we heard how a recent US copyright case involving a high-profile celebrity tattoo artist has challenged an industry norm; and we unpacked Microsoft Copilot’s copyright indemnity clause.

Today, and every remaining Friday throughout March, subscribers will receive a separate Future of IP newsletter of curated stories.

Content to look forward to

For the rest of March, the Focus hub will feature more future-gazing articles and interviews—as well as videos and webinars.

Highlights include an interview with IP counsel at Meta; a look at young IP professionals and AI; and a focus on how Justin Bieber was able to sell rights to his back catalogue for $200 million when he was just 28 years old.

Also, there will be two free webinars on the impact of AI, and junior IP professionals:

AI and IP: What happens next?
March 21 at 5pm GMT
Featuring: Robert Jehan, partner, Williams Powell (DABUS patent attorney); and Bob Giles, chief IP counsel, Qualcomm.

As the technology takes centre-stage, WIPR asks ask those with skin in the game for their unique perspective on AI.

Patent attorney Robert Jehan wrote the UK and EPO applications for the DABUS device, an invention made by an AI system testing IP offices the world over. The project is at the forefront of efforts to recognise AI's importance within the IP system.

Bob Giles, chief IP counsel at Qualcomm, heads up the IP department at one of the world's largest chipmakers. Qualcomm's hardware will power the AI-enabled devices that promise to revolutionise computers and consumer products.

Topics of discussion will be:

  • The patentability of AI-related inventions
  • What IP protection industry needs for its AI innovations
  • Legislators' current thinking and what might happen next
