Freeths appoints patents director

Murgitroyd patent attorney joins Freeths | Clients have included Nokia, Rolls-Royce, Arm, and Jaguar Land Rover across various industries such as consumer goods, construction, and automotive.

Freeths has appointed Richard Ellis as its director of patents, who will be based in the firm’s office in Birmingham, UK.

Ellis, who joins from Murgitroyd as senior patent attorney, brings a focus on protecting inventions and advising on patent strategy.

Richard Beverley, managing partner of Freeths Birmingham, noted that Ellis is the latest in a long line of recruits aimed at driving Freeths’ growth strategy.

With a background in research and development (R&D), Ellis has had hands-on experience in the inventive process.

Ellis brings more than 16 years’ experience as a patent attorney covering a range of industries such as consumer goods, construction, medical devices, energy, automotive, aerospace and telecommunications covering all types of mechanical, electrical, electronic and software patents.

His clients have included Nokia, Rolls-Royce, Arm, and Jaguar Land Rover.

Ellis will work alongside the national head of IP, Simon Barker, to build a patent practice within Freeths, making the team a full-service provider of IP services.

Commenting on the appointment, Barker said: “Richard’s arrival is instrumental in our growth strategy and in strengthening our services to clients, making us a leading full-service IP practice.

“It comes at an exciting time of growth for the firm and Richard’s wealth of experience will further complement that growth and our national capabilities,” he added.

Ellis emphasised his “excitement” in bringing his patent capabilities to Freeths.

“My background of working in R&D and then as a patent attorney both in-house and in industry, means I bring first-hand experience from a client’s perspective, and I am excited by the opportunity to be part of a full service team that can deliver real value to Freeths’ clients,” said Ellis.
