Morgan Lewis

Firm overview:

Morgan Lewis is one of a number of US law firms building up a patent practice in Europe, as the industry eyes the Unified Patent Court (UPC) as a possible hub for global patent litigation. The firm has made a number of high-profile recruits to strengthen its European offering, notably renowned patent litigator and Powell Gilbert co-founder Tim Powell in October 2024, and Hiroshi Sheraton, who joined the firm’s London office from Baker McKenzie in September that year.

A network of more than 200 lawyers and other professionals in 23 offices globally allows attorneys to partner with colleagues across the world to protect clients’ rights. A multi-speciality team that covers patent prosecution, portfolio management and litigation develops and implements strategies for some of the best-known technology companies in the world, as well as both emerging and established pharmaceutical, biologic and medical device clients.

Recent additions to Morgan Lewis’s European patent litigation practice enable the firm to offer advice in the US, Europe and Asia under one roof on global patent enforcement campaigns. The London team works closely with colleagues in the Munich office—opened in 2023—to represent clients in the UPC and co-ordinate pan-European and global IP litigation matters.

Team overview:

Morgan Lewis has an expanding European/UK team that collaborates with its established IP litigation practice in the US.

Tim Powell is known for helping to build Powell Gilbert into a highly respected IP boutique since its creation in 2007. Now based in London at Morgan Lewis, Powell advocates in the UK and European patent offices; the English High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and Court of Justice of the European Union.

Also in London, Hiroshi Sheraton regularly co-ordinates multi-jurisdictional IP litigation, with his practice focused on contentious patent and trademark issues and life sciences matters.

Another key member of the team, associate Benjamin Rowlatt leverages his experience and scientific technical background to represent clients in complex life sciences and high-tech fields, handling all manner of chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech patent litigation.
