China Pat Intellectual Property Office
Firm overview:
China Pat Intellectual Property Office has expanded from a Beijing-based specialist practice into an international one-stop-shop, covering all bases related to the protection and exploitation of intangible assets. The firm operates a ‘hybrid’ model which encourages cross-training between patent attorneys and litigators, and focuses on the long-term value of a carefully drafted patent.
The patent practice serves mainly large domestic companies, which have multiple IP needs and global ambitions. China Pat’s team also works with foreign associates that refer patent work from a more varied client base, including startups. Since its founding in 2003, the practice has evolved with the increasingly sophisticated patent landscape in China, with the team now providing more strategic advice at earlier stages in the patent lifecycle.
China Pat provides the full suite of contentious services, and has secured significant victories in patent invalidation and infringement litigations in recent years.
Team overview:
Headquartered in Beijing, the firm has branches in Hong Kong, Xi’an, Changsha, Wuhan, and Shenzhen, as well as international advisory desks.
Yajie Jiang is one of the firm’s stand-out patent prosecution experts. Jiang drafts both Chinese and PCT international filings, leveraging her background in electronics, communications, computer science and internet technologies. She also handles re-examination, invalidation and administration litigation.
Another team member with strength in non-contentious patent matters is managing partner Kelly Yao, who is skilled in patent strategy, mining and layout, as well as handling applications and responses.
Drawing on a background in mechanical engineering, Chunguang Hu guides clients through the whole patent lifecycle, with particular expertise in tackling complex procedures such as re-examinations and invalidations. Hu was previously a patent examiner at the CNIPA.
