Israeli patent attorney includes tribute to Hamas victims in patent application

Attorney dedicates PCT application to granddaughter killed during attack | Colleague at law firm also named as kidnap victim who ‘should have been here’ to file.

A patent attorney whose granddaughter was killed in the October 7 attack by Hamas has paid tribute to her in a filed patent application.

The application, mailed on November 15 by Bruce Alpert of The Luzzatto Group, for a patent related to a method of charging an electric vehicle battery, begins with the paragraph: “This patent application is in memory of all the victims of the October 7, 2023 massacre in Israel, especially the grandchild of the patent attorney who drafted it.”

Alpert also called for the “safe and fast return of all those taken hostage, especially advocate Amit Soussana who should have been here to file this patent application.”

Soussana was kidnapped from her home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza during the invasion and has not been seen or heard from since. She was at home unwell from her job as an associate in The Luzzatto Group’s international filing department when Hamas raided.

The CEO of Charging Robotics, whose patent “Wireless Charging in Automated Parking Garages” Alpert filed, posted a picture of the application on LinkedIn alongside Soussana’s photo.

“Extraordinary times call for Extraordinary measures,” said CEO Hovav Gilan, adding: “The first paragraph of this patent is unique. I hope it stays unique. I hope patents remain technical. I hope no obituaries will be for grandchildren. I hope for the safe and prompt return of Amit.”

The Luzzato Group has been joined by other law firms in Israel in a group message urging for Soussana’s release and condemning the killing of Shani Gabay, a law intern at Gilad Behar & Co Law Office who died at the Nova music festival.
