Montgomery forms IP team led by Buchanan partners

Law firm Montgomery McCracken has added Alfred Zaher and Shawn Li, both from Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, to its newly-formed IP department in Philadelphia.

Zaher will serve as chair of the department, while Li joins as a partner.

“We view Montgomery as an entrepreneurial law firm, and this is an opportunity for us to build out our established IP practice by offering clients greater flexibility and attention,” Zaher said.

Zaher worked as a research and electrical engineer for more than a decade. His clients come from sectors such as biotechnology, electronics, software, and pharmaceuticals.

Zaher’s practice centres on patent, trademark, and trade secret litigation. He has experience in managing clients’ IP portfolios in China, including using the Chinese court system to bring enforcement proceedings.

Li similarly advises clients on protecting IP in China, and assists national and multinational clients with cross-border technology transfer. He worked in medical science before practising law, and his clients are in fields such as biotechnology and medical devices.

Over his career, Li has assisted with patent, trademark, and trade secret enforcement, and he assists clients with conducting patent infringement and validity assessments.

Richard Simins, vice chairman and executive partner at Montgomery, said: “We have been looking to start an IP department that could offer new services while complementing our existing litigation and business departments.”

He continued: “We believe Alfred and Shawn are the right individuals to lead the growth of this department and expect them to make immediate contributions to the firm.”

Maryellen Madden, of counsel, and John Powell, associate, have also joined Montgomery’s IP department from Buchanan.
