Clarivate enhances Asia footprint with Hanlim IPS deal

IP service provider  Clarivate has furthered its Asia strategy with the acquisition of South Korea-based  Hanlim IPS, a patent research and consulting service.

The deal, which was  announced yesterday, December 1, comes one month after Clarivate bought Chinese patent data provider  Beijing IncoPat and is the latest in a series acquisitions for the provider.

Clarivate’s purchase of Hanlim IPS will allow the company to provide a more comprehensive suite of IP solutions to customers in South Korea and worldwide, said the press release.

Jeff Roy, president of IP group Clarivate, said: “Combining market-leading solutions and global footprint of Clarivate with deep understanding of local customers, leading South Korean capabilities and excellent talent from Hanlim IPS means we can better support customers to significantly accelerate innovation both in South Korea and worldwide.

“Asia is an important hub for innovation, and by joining forces with Hanlim IPS we are better positioned on our mission to be a trusted, indispensable partner to innovators worldwide.”

South Korea is showing the steepest growth globally of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) filings with an increase of 12.8% from 2018 to 2019, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The country, which was in the top five patent filers for 2019, filed 19,085 applications. In total, Asia-based applicants now account for more than half of all PCT applications.

Lim, Dong-Choon, founder and CEO of Hamlin IPS, said: “Hamlin and Clarivate have a similar vision for the industry. Joining Clarivate means we can provide our South Korean customers with access to a much wider range of global and local resources. It also means we can further broaden our international vision.”

Earlier this year, in July, Clarivate announced it was combining with CPA Global, creating a new ‘Goliath’ in the IP services sector.

Clarivate has also purchased smaller, local providers including Belgium-based  Darts-ip, and Australian start-up  TrademarkVision, and, in October,  Beijing IncoPat.
