CIPA elects new president

The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) has elected Stephen Jones as president of the association.

He succeeded Tony Rollins, who has previously served as managing counsel for European patents at pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme.

Jones was elected at CIPA’s 135th annual general meeting last night, October 4. He previously served as vice president of the institute.

He joined the profession in 1978, and qualified as a patent attorney in 1981 and later also as a solicitor.

Currently, Jones has a number of academic roles, including at the University of Oxford and University College London.

He has also served as partner at Baker McKenzie, Allen & Overy and Boodle Hatfield.

“My priorities in the coming year will be to continue the institute’s work in policy and education, international harmonisation and promotion of diversity in the profession,” said Jones.

CIPA has strongly supported the Unified Patent Court and the UK’s role in it, Jones continued, “and in the world of trademarks and designs, we have joined in responding to the challenges of Brexit”.

“Throughout its 135-year history, including over 125 years under a Royal Charter, CIPA has been there to help its members meet such challenges and to protect the public,” added Jones.

Jones will work with vice-president Julia Florence, senior patent counsel at GSK.
