Parminder Lally is a partner and patent attorney specialising in artificial intelligence (AI), deep tech, software inventions and physics-based technologies.
Drawing on experience gained both in-house and in private practice, she has built a strong reputation for working with high-growth startups, university spin-outs and SMEs, particularly within the Cambridge innovation ecosystem.
Her work spans a broad range of AI and machine learning technologies, including image analysis, object classification, human-computer interaction, text-to-speech systems, 5G communications, synthetic dataset generation, generative AI models, and the application of AI to control industrial processes and machines.
Lally contributes to the development of IP policy and practice in emerging technologies. She serves as vice-chair of the AI Committee of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and is part of the Appleyard Lees team exploring the use of AI tools within intellectual property practice.
Beyond AI, she has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications for software-based innovations across fields such as bioinformatics, cyber security, threat detection, sound recognition and natural language processing.
Lally has also been actively involved with IP Inclusive since its foundation.
She jointly led the team that created and launched the ‘Careers in Ideas’ initiative, an outreach programme to raise awareness of IP careers and broaden access to the profession.
A regular speaker and facilitator, Lally frequently contributes to conferences, panel discussions and webinars on topics including allyship, mental health, intersectionality and inclusive workplace culture. She has hosted Women in IP events and frequently prompts meaningful conversations about inclusion across the profession.
