Key details

  • Job title: Chair of Patent Litigation Group
  • Firm: Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison LLP
  • Jurisdiction: US

Catherine Nyarady is one of the leading patent litigators in the US, consistently securing landmark trial victories in multi-billion-dollar technology and life sciences disputes and shaping outcomes in some of the most closely watched IP cases before US courts.

She most recently represented semiconductor giant Qualcomm in a high-profile breach of contract dispute brought by Arm concerning the latter’s licensing agreement with Qualcomm subsidiary Nuvia. She secured a jury verdict in Qualcomm’s favour in December 2024 and achieved a resounding post-trial victory in September 2025, including success on judgment as a matter of law and defeating Arm’s efforts to overturn the verdict.

She currently represents Qualcomm as plaintiff in a multibillion-dollar breach of contract action against Arm concerning alleged anticompetitive conduct, with trial scheduled for October.

Her broader experience includes significant high-value representations across multiple industries. She represented medical device company Kurin in a patent infringement suit brought by Magnolia Medical Technologies, obtaining final judgment in Kurin’s favour, which was affirmed on appeal in March 2026.

She has long served as lead counsel for Edwards Lifesciences in multiple major disputes, including transcatheter heart valve litigation against Medtronic that resulted in jury verdicts of $74 million and $393 million for willful patent infringement, and ultimately contributed to a $1 billion settlement. She also handles a continuing $140 million contract dispute involving Edwards’ Harpoon mitral valve repair device, raising complex issues relating to milestone payments and post-closing obligations in M&A transactions.

Nyarady is also a respected IP scholar and commentator. She co-authors a regular IP litigation column in the New York Law Journal, and wrote the ‘Settling Patent Cases’ chapter in Settlement Agreements in Commercial Disputes.
