Appleyard Lees appoints new managing partner

Managing partner oversees a varied range of global patent portfolios, often acting as the ‘in-house’ attorney for multinational clients.

Appleyard Lees has announced the appointment of Bobby Smithson as its new managing partner, effective January 1, 2024.

Smithson has been at Appleyard Lees for more than two decades, having joined in 2002 and becoming a partner in 2009.

Smithson’s work involves collaborating closely with the in-house patent divisions of major corporations, both domestically and internationally.

He oversees a varied range of global patent portfolios, often acting as the ‘in-house’ attorney for multinational clients.

Smithson’s experience also includes advising and handling high-profile oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office.

David Clark, who served as the firm's managing partner for the preceding two and a half years, expressed his delight to “pass the baton to Bobby”.

“His commitment to continuous improvement makes him the perfect choice to lead the firm. I am confident that under Bobby’s guidance, Appleyard Lees will thrive,” he added.

Smithson has a background in chemistry and specialises in polymers, coatings, and healthcare devices.

His expertise spans patent work related to product inventions, novel polymers, compositions comprising existing polymers, and new operating processes.

Additionally, he has drafted and prosecuted patents for complex mechanical inventions, including engines and gearboxes.

In addition to his new role, Smithson holds supervisory responsibilities within the firm, including leading the firm’s equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.

He is a signatory to the IP inclusive leaders pledge and is an active member of the senior leaders’ diversity think tank.

Commenting on his recent appointment Smithson said he was “honoured” to take on this role.

“I am grateful for the trust placed in me by my fellow partners and am committed to continuing the great work that David has started alongside our CEO and senior management team,” added Smithson.
