Bird & Bird relocates London patent litigator to co-head San Francisco office

IP partner will continue to assist clients with legal needs outside the US | He will co-head San Francisco office which launched in 2018.

Bird & Bird is strengthening its IP presence in California by moving patent litigation specialist Chris de Mauny from London to the firm’s San Francisco office.

Partner De Mauny advises US clients in life sciences, tech and sustainable technologies on the IP landscape in Europe, and will continue to support US businesses with their ventures into foreign markets.

He has practised in London for 15 years, 13 of which were at Bird & Bird, and will co-head the San Francisco office alongside Pattie Walsh from April 1.

As well as working on client matters while in London, De Mauny has provided in-house training on patent law and litigation to junior Bird & Bird lawyers and more senior colleagues.

Bird & Bird’s San Francisco office was launched in 2018 and supports US clients for their contentious and non-contentious operations outside the US.

Commenting on the move, Walsh said: “I’m very much looking forward to having Chris here as part of our team in San Francisco. He has worked with a wide range of innovative businesses across the US for several years and his expertise in intellectual property law and patent litigation will be a huge additional support to our clients in the US.

“With Chris on the ground, we look forward to building on our strong IP offering as the San Francisco office goes from strength to strength.”

De Mauny added: “Markets outside the US present challenges and opportunities for IP and technology-rich US companies. Being in the US will make it easier for me to help existing and future clients navigate or exploit these.

“Continuing our efforts to ensure our US presence acts as a gateway for our clients’ legal needs outside the US will be a key part of my role, as well as continuing to build strong relationships with US businesses.”
