Seyfarth Shaw

Firm overview:

Seyfarth Shaw offers end-to-end patent services, from strategic counselling and prosecution to litigation and portfolio monetisation. The firm serves clients ranging from startups to large Fortune 100 companies, in a diverse range of IP-rich sectors, including counselling on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications for artificial intelligence (AI)-related inventions.

The Los Angeles team, led by national patent practice lead Alan Lenkin, has a particular focus on non-contentious patent matters, and has represented Qualcomm for decades. The firm’s SeyfarthLink collaboration platform and other proprietary technology support the management of complex IP portfolios.

Seyfarth has a track record of success in handling complex patent infringement cases before juries and judges, at both the district court and appellate levels, as well as the International Trade Commission (ITC) and Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Team overview:

Brian Michaelis is partner and Intellectual Property practice group chair, while Ed Maluf is partner and co-chair.

Houston partner Lisa Meyerhoff has more than three decades of experience in patents, and has assisted clients with obtaining eight-figure judgments for patent infringement. Fluent in all areas of IP protection, Meyerhoff regularly speaks at international conferences and has been involved in mediations, arbitrations, and bench and jury trials in federal courts. Her representation of clients is informed by experience in advising both plaintiffs and defendants.

In August 2025, the firm brought in seasoned patent attorney Cory Davis from Baker Hostetler. Davis’s practice includes advising on AI, machine learning and telecoms technology. The firm also added counsel Alton Hornsby to its team last year, who has helped clients obtain US and international patents for over 25 years.

The work also includes preparing patentability reports, freedom-to-operate reports, and landscape reports to support product development and strategy. In addition, Seyfarth prepares cease and desist letters to enforce Fridababy’s intellectual property rights and respond to patent infringement allegations raised by competitors.

Puya Partow-Navid (partner, Los Angeles) and Taylor Kolb (associate, Chicago) lead the team.

  • Patent prosecution and portfolio management for Qualcomm

Seyfarth prosecutes US and foreign patent applications for global tech leader Qualcomm related to 6G wireless technology, semiconductor devices, artificial intelligence/machine learning, automotive cockpit platform technology, and internet of things (IoT) devices.

  • HydraPak v Sawyer Products

Seyfarth serves as lead counsel for defendant Sawyer Products, a water filtration company known for its collapsible water bottles and global charitable partnerships.

Seyfarth leads Sawyer’s defence, asserting counterclaims of patent non-infringement, invalidity, and antitrust activities. HydraPak moved for a preliminary injunction, which the team is opposing.

Lisa Meyerhoff (partner, Houston), Brian Michaelis (partner, Boston), Vince Smolczynski (counsel, Charlotte), Taylor Kolb (associate, Chicago), and Will Spinola (staff attorney, Boston) are on Seyfarth’s team for the matter.
