Leason Ellis

Firm overview:

Within its full-service IP offering, Leason Ellis has a solid patent practice, providing counselling, filing and prosecution, watch services and other key resources. A peer says it is an “extremely intelligent and capable group and I have no doubt that they would be successful in any and all aspects of the patent process”.

The firm has a positive track record regarding high-stakes reexamination matters in numerous technology areas, and its team of patent attorneys has obtained thousands of issued patents to protect large and small organisations’ cutting-edge ideas.

Leason Ellis litigators have successfully advocated clients’ technology rights in district and circuit courts throughout the US, including the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, as well as before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the International Trade Commission (ITC).

Team overview:

Partner Michael Davitz is a US patent attorney and physician who has counselled clients in all aspects of IP law for over two decades, informed by over 15 years in biomedical research. A peer comments: “We have found Michael and his colleagues extremely patient—willing to explain the complexities of each patent application to our team. They are very thoughtful and thorough—able to help us get several patents approved despite multiple rejections.”

In January 2026, Leason Ellis expanded its patent team with the addition of a group of life sciences professionals from Haley Guiliano, a patent practice that originated as a spin-off from Ropes & Gray.

The new hires to the Patent Practice Group include co-founder James Haley, partners Karen Mangasarian and Brian Gummow, and associate Diana Danca, as well as law clerks, technical advisors and a patent agent.

Departures from the patent team over the past year include Roland Rivera Santiago, who joined Blank Rome towards the end of 2025.
