Team overview:
Kilpatrick’s Intellectual Property Department is led by chair Jennifer Arkowitz and deputy chair Michael Turton. Worldwide, the firm has more than 220 patent prosecution attorneys and technical/scientific staff.
Roger Wylie is Kilpatrick’s firm managing partner and is based in the Seattle office, combining firm-wide leadership with an active and strategically focused patent practice. He serves as lead counsel to major technology clients, advising on patent prosecution and portfolio strategy for complex and disruptive innovations.
The firm’s Mechanical and Medical Device Patent practice is led by Steve Borgman in Houston. Borgman’s practice spans nearly four decades, and encompasses advising on a range of IP matters including mergers and acquisitions, licensing agreements, and freedom-to-operate opinions. Borgman also handles patent portfolios of hundreds of US and foreign patents and applications.
Mehrnaz Boroumand Smith has a litigation-focused practice, and has represented well-known high technology companies in complex IP matters. As well as her federal court appearances, she is experienced in arbitration matters, and her clients for patent cases include GoPro, Rhapsody International, and Oracle.
Key matters:
- Patent prosecution and counselling for Zoom
Kilpatrick provides patent procurement and counselling services to Zoom. The firm collaborates with the company’s key technical and business personnel to identify and secure innovations with patent protection, aligning with the company’s strategic corporate objectives. Additionally, the firm provides Zoom with guidance on both domestic and international patent strategies.

- Brunswick v Volvo Penta of The Americas and Volvo Penta v Brunswick
Kilpatrick represented Volvo Penta in a patent infringement lawsuit. Brunswick asserted that Volvo Penta infringed five of its patents related to automatic docking and control of boats. The district court judge found the asserted claims of all five invalid and dismissed the complaint.
The team also represented Volvo in a separate suit with Brunswick that settled, and in related IPRs at the PTAB.

- Strategic counselling and portfolio management for Labcorp
Kilpatrick represents Labcorp, which operates one of the largest clinical laboratory networks in the world. The firm’s work for the client includes strategic counselling, M&A due diligence, and portfolio management for over 5,000 pending and issued patents.
Kilpatrick also represents Labcorp in IP litigation matters. Charles Calkins and Matias Ferrario are the lead attorneys for the client.
