Stobbs
Firm overview:
“Their reputation precedes them,” says a peer of Stobbs, an industry-disrupting IP specialist offering a unique, business-informed approach to brand advisory. Known for competitive pricing, an agile structure and a holistic litigation strategy, the firm handles portfolios for major global brands via its intangible asset management service.
Stobbs’ different approach to IP law divides opinion among its peers, who acknowledge that the firm is highly successful in its volume filing and portfolio management, and that it does a “very good job with UK contentious work at the Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO)”. Elsewhere, however, the firm’s conduct and success in recent disputes is questioned; but Stobbs’ busy docket of work for large corporates, strong client retention rates, and UKIPO hearings being used by the tribunal for training purposes seem to refute any suggestion of quality control issues.
Team overview:
Stobbs has offices in the UK and Europe, plus one in the US. In line with its unique approach, the firm has intangible asset directors rather than ‘partners’ leading its vast team of fee-earners.
“We’re all very envious of Julius,” admits a peer, referring to founder Julius Stobbs. Described as “an extremely intelligent guy” and “a very canny operator”, Stobbs is credited with the “phenomenal success story” that his firm has become, and is adept in brand and portfolio management, as well as contentious matters.
Departures in recent years, such as Geoff Steward’s move to Addleshaw Goddard in 2024 with a team of IP specialists, have contributed to peers questioning the firm’s succession plan beyond its highly regarded founder.
Claire Breheny was a high-profile departure from 2025, moving to Mathys & Squire to become head of trademarks.
However, the current team of over 25 directors—handling work for large corporate clients—indicates a significant amount of senior talent at Stobbs.
That includes Louise Goodsell, who has experience across all key areas of trademark law and advises on contentious issues such as negotiating domain name purchases and trademark disputes.
