UK Trademarks Rankings 2026

Abion

Firm overview:

From its origins as a Nordic brand protection business, Abion has evolved into a European IP specialist through a series of mergers and acquisitions, including UK-based IP firm Lane IP in 2024. Today, the firm has a comprehensive trademark practice, handling a significant volume of national filings, oppositions and litigation matters. With an international footprint across 13 jurisdictions, Abion offers global portfolio management delivered as an all-in-one IP solution. Clients have visibility and control over their brand assets via the firm’s tech-enabled platform.

Team overview:

Former Lane IP managing partner Steven Lane maintains an active client management role at Abion as global head of Brands & Legal, including supporting a major British retailer with brand-related matters.

Natalie Clare serves as UK country manager for the firm, leading the team alongside experienced practitioners such as Jandan Aliss, who manages complex trademark portfolios for clients across a range of industries.

Azhar Sadique and Kane Ridley, who co-founded the London office in 2023, both left the firm in 2026.

Key matters:

  • Xiaomi: EUIPO Board of Appeal matter

Abion successfully represented Xiaomi in an EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) appeal, invalidating a third party’s ‘MIUI’ trademark application for kitchen appliances by proving bad faith.

  • S&P Global: UK trademark portfolio management

The team has recently assumed responsibility for managing the UK trademark portfolio for S&P Global and its related entities. This includes advice on filing strategies and enforcement of its brands.

  • Maya Appliances: UKIPO appeal

A third party registered the mark ‘Vidiem’ for identical goods and then opposed the Maya Appliances application. The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO)  thought there was not enough evidence for bad faith. On appeal to the appointed person this decision was reversed and the prior right was completely invalidated.
