Via Licensing adds 100 Blackberry SEPs to patent pool

A licensing program developer, Via Licensing Corporation, has purchased nearly 100 Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard-essential patents (SEPs).

In an announcement issued yesterday, May 22, Via Licensing said the patents were invented by Blackberry, and covered “foundational technologies” including advance packet networks, carrier aggregation and network selection with coverage in 23 countries.

“All Via LTE licensees will receive a licence to these patents at no extra cost,” the press release said.

The patents will be the latest to be added to Via’s “defensive patent bank”, which was originally announced in October 2017.

Via Licensing said it “is committed to increasing the value that Via’s wireless patent pools provide to product manufacturers and distributors in Via’s pools by acquiring and aggregating relevant patents for IP risk management”.

Joe Siino, the president of Via Licensing, said the acquisition is another example of the company continuing to develop creative patent licensing solutions for the wireless ecosystem and its patent pool licensees.

Siino added: “These patents were carefully selected from the best of the Blackberry SEPs in mid-2018 due to their market relevance, exceptional quality, significant global coverage, and essentiality to the LTE standard and beyond.”

Doug Luftman, general counsel at software company Nomis Solutions, said Via Licensing’s patent acquisition program “helps the wireless ecosystem gain greater certainty in protecting its investment in innovation, accelerating technology adoption, and transparently streamlining the overall IP licensing process.”
