Patent pool operator launches auto aftermarket platform

Licences cover products installed in vehicles after original sale | Over 40 patent holders have already signed up | Aims to simplify how technology is shared between connected vehicles.

Avanci has launched a dedicated programme for patent licensing in the vehicle aftermarket sector called Avanci Aftermarket, aimed at streamlining how innovative technology is shared.

The patent pool, which aims to simplify how technology is shared in the connected vehicle sector, has created a “one-stop licensing platform for vehicle aftermarket products using 4G, 3G and 2G cellular communications”.

The licences cover products with internet connectivity that are installed in vehicles after their original sale. This includes devices inside the vehicle, or used in a container, trailer or other equipment that is hauled by a vehicle.

Avanci Aftermarket includes three categories for products: monitoring only, infotainment, and other multi-function products. In terms of royalties, rates range from $3 per device for 3G/2G monitoring products up to $15 for some infotainment devices.

One-stop shop

Avanci offers IP licensing deals from multiple patent holders in a single transaction, removing the need to secure many licences with individual licensors. Licences are secured at fixed rates, which are paid for once and cover the lifetime of a device.

Its aftermarket service already has over 40 patent holders signed up to license their cellular essential patents, including a company that collects road tolls and a firm that provides intelligent transport solutions for the public sector.

The service is an addition to Avanci’s Vehicle programme aimed at car manufacturers.

Marianne Frydenlund, vice president at Avanci, said: “We are pleased to launch Avanci Aftermarket with the support of a significant group of licensors, and we welcome our first licensees.

“With our experience in creating the one-stop licensing marketplace for connected vehicles, the addition of vehicle aftermarket devices is a natural extension that builds on that success. We are committed to providing efficient licensing solutions for new categories of connected products as the Internet of Things expands.”

Avanci was launched in 2016 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Licensors on its platform include Acer, Blackberry, Ericsson, Panasonic, Philips and Sony. The firm claims that its approach to patented technology sharing has transformed the licensing landscape, streamlining the process and enabling more connections to be made.
