ECIJA strengthens in Mexico with ex-president of AMPPI

Experienced TMT expert Miguel Ángel Margáin is to head the IP division and TMT sectors as part of the firm’s growth strategy.

ECIJA has added Miguel Ángel Margáin as its new partner in Mexico, making his departure from  Pérez Correa González.

The addition is a part of the firm's growth strategy in Mexico City where Margáin will lead the firm's IP practice.

His appointment follows ECIJA Mexico's recent announcements regarding the launch of a new financial advisory business line and the establishment of an environmental and sustainability practice.

Additionally, the firm has formed an international alliance with Taylor Wessing.

Ricardo Chacón, managing partner of ECIJA Mexico, expressed his satisfaction with Margáin's addition, highlighting “with the addition of Mike, we are taking a firm step towards consolidating our technology and entertainment (TMT) and IP practice.”

Joaquín Rodríguez, founding partner and member of the executive committee of ECIJA Mexico, emphasised the significance of Margáin's appointment for the firm's IP and TMT offering.

“Mike Margáin is a crucial addition to our team, and we anticipate strengthening our IP and TMT practice in alignment with ECIJA's international and local growth strategy," said Rodriguez.

Margáin has over three decades of experience in IP and innovation protection and exploitation, both at the national and international levels. His expertise extends to the TMT sector, in both the private and public domains.

Notable achievements in Margáin's career include serving as president of the Mexican Association for the Protection of IP (AMPPI) from 2009- 2012.

He also held the position of vice president and spokesperson of the IP Rights Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico .

Margáin participates in organisations such as the International Trademark Association (INTA) and the Inter-American Association of Trademarks (ASIPI).

He also served as the general manager of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property from January 2013-November 2018. During his tenure, Margáin chaired the Madrid Assembly of the World IP Organization (WIPO) and played a role in the negotiation rounds of the Treaty between Mexico, the US, and Canada (USMCA).
