Avanci expands IoT offering with EV charger licensing

Patent pool secures three licensees as it launches EV charger programme | 80 million EV chargers forecast to be installed by 2030 | Easee, GARO among first to sign up.

Avanci has launched a new connected EV (electric vehicle) charger programme, with three initial licensees including Norwegian firm Easee, Eaton (a global power management company), and Swedish firm GARO.

The new programme is the second of Avanci’s Internet of Things (IoT) licensing programmes, following the launch of its 4G Smart Meter programme in October 2023.

According to the firm, installations of cellular-connected EV chargers are predicted to grow by around 40% CAGR (compound annual growth rate), and more than 80 million units are forecast to be installed by 2030.

Smart EV chargers use an internet connection to make electric vehicle charging more efficient, convenient, and sustainable while supporting the integration of EVs into the larger energy ecosystem, explained Avanci.

Kasim Alfalahi, founder and CEO of Avanci, said: “We are proud to launch Avanci EV Charger…expanding on our experience in creating the one-stop marketplace for connected vehicle licensing. Avanci brings a simpler, more efficient approach to sharing the work of thousands of inventors at companies and research institutes around the world.”

The Avanci EV Charger programme offers manufacturers of smart EV chargers the option of a single licence for their connected products, covering the essential 4G, 3G and 2G cellular patents from licensors in the programme.

Licensees pay for the programme licences once for the lifetime of each charger, spanning a range of cellular connected EV chargers from individual home units to multi-outlet systems for public charging, explained Avanci.

Marianne Frydenlund, vice president, IOT licensing at Avanci, commented: “The Avanci EV Charger programme is an exciting new solution for the Internet of Things, and we are delighted to welcome Easee, Eaton and GARO as our first licensees.

“When we discussed new opportunities with IoT companies, there was a clear need to simplify technology sharing in the fast-growing smart EV charger market, and our initial licensees and licensors enthusiastically engaged with us to provide input. We look forward to recruiting further participants.”

Erik Færevaag, CEO at Easee, said: “Avanci streamlines our licensing for connected chargers, freeing us to enhance value for our customers.”

Niklas Rönnäng, CEO, GARO E-mobility, added: “The partnership with Avanci allows us to efficiently manage the licences for our connected chargers, which is positive for both our customers and GARO E-mobility. This means that we can continue to focus our efforts on delivering innovative solutions for charging electric vehicles to the market.”

As well as its IoT programmes, Avanci has expanded its connected vehicle licensing programmes over the past year, with the 5G connected vehicle licensing programme launched in August; and Avanci Aftermarket, a patent licensing programme for cellular technology in the vehicle aftermarket sector, launched in February.

The firm also this year unveiled its Avanci Broadcast programme, a “one-stop licensing platform for licensors and licensees of essential patents for the ATSC 3.0 standard”; and Avanci Video, aimed at internet streaming providers and spans the latest video technologies.
