USITC to investigate Samsung products over electronic payment tech

The US International Trade Commission ( ITC) has instituted an investigation into mobile phones and smartwatches sold by Samsung.

In a notice of investigation, issued Monday, August 12, the ITC said it would be targeting devices with ‘multifunction emulators’ following a complaint by Dynamics Inc, a company which manufactures electronic payment devices.

Pennsyvania-based Dynamics Inc filed asked the ITC to investigate Samsung in July 12, claiming that Samsung’s Korean and American arms were infringing a number of its patents by using its patented technology in certain mobile phones and smartwatches.

It asked the commission to issue cease and desist orders, alleging that the sale and import of certain Samsung products into the US violated the country’s Tariff Act.

The asserted patents (US numbers 8,827,153; 10,032,100; 10,223,631; and 10,255,545) cover technology related to electronic payment devices such as magnetic stripe communications devices and devices with multifunction magnetic emulators.

Dynamics Inc said Samsung has infringed five claims of the ‘153 patent, 20 claims of the ‘100 patent, 15 claims of the ‘631 patent and 16 claims of the ‘545 patent.

The ITC said Samsung must submit its response to the complaint and notice of investigation within 20 days.
