HSF marks launch of TM and design arm with new hire

Global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has launched its European Trademark and Design Filing & Prosecution practice with the appointment of a senior European trademark and design attorney.

Leading the regional practice from Milan, Annamaria Algieri will work closely with the firm’s offices in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Belgium, as well as with the global IP team. She will also collaborate with the firm's long-standing Trademark Filing & Prosecution Australian practice, led by Ike Papageorge, and its recently established Chinese IP practice, following the hire of Peng Lei in 2021.

Algieri advises clients on trademark clearances and the analysis of trademark portfolios, as well as on pre-filing, filing, prosecution, opposition proceedings, nullity and revocation actions. She also assists clients with the filing and prosecution of design in the European Union, and provides strategic advice and manages worldwide trademark portfolios.

Algieri is experienced in assisting national and international clients in trademark, design and copyright matters across a variety of industry sectors, from food and beverages, pharmaceutical, chemical, design to fashion, automotive and entertainment.

Her practice also extends to the management of customs surveillance programmes aimed at preventing the import or re-export of suspicious goods.

As well as being an EUIPO representative in relation to trademarks, design and industrial property, Algieri is a member of various trade bodies: the Trademark Administrators' Committee of the International Trademark Association; the Association of International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property; and the Pharmaceutical Trademark Group.

Laura Orlando, managing partner of the firm's Milan office and joint global head of Intellectual Property, said: “The launch of this new regional European practice is testament to the firm's commitment to the region, and further enhances the firm's top-tier Intellectual Property offering in Europe and globally.

“Annamaria's expertise and experience will be a great addition to our global IP team. We'd like to extend a warm welcome to Annamaria Algieri on behalf of the whole firm.”

Algieri said of her new role: “I am very happy to start this new chapter with Herbert Smith Freehills. In addition to its top-tier global offering and clear vision, I particularly appreciate the firm's spirit and testament to growth, to which I have felt an immediate connection. I have been working in the area of Intellectual Property for many years, especially in connection with Trademark and Design Filing and Prosecution, and I have observed first-hand how important it is for our clients to be able to protect their intangible assets.”
