Fish & Richardson to open China office

The Chinese Ministry of Justice has approved law firm Fish & Richardson’s application to open an office in Shenzhen, China.

In the new office, Fish & Richardson will provide US and EU legal services for the firm’s Chinese clients, which include Huawei Technologies, Ant Financial, and Hinese Electric.

According to the firm, Shenzhen has filed the largest number of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications out of all the cities in China. The city hosts some of China’s most innovative companies, which account for almost half of China’s PCT filings.

Ryan McCarthy, principal, will serve as the firm’s chief representative at the Shenzhen location.

McCarthy, who has worked at Fish & Richardson’s Austin office in Texas for more than a decade, has experience in patent prosecution, litigation, and post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews and covered business method reviews.

He will be accompanied in Shenzhen by Yong (Eric) Peng, an associate who speaks fluent Mandarin.

Peter Devlin, president of the firm, said: “We are excited to be opening an office in China’s Silicon Valley. We serve many of China’s leading innovators, and this will give us a base of operations to meet their needs on the ground, in real time, whenever they need us.”

In addition to announcing the opening of the Shenzhen office, the firm has forged a partnership with Zhejiang Hangzhou Future SCI-TECH City (STC), an innovation and venture platform based in Hangzhou.

Fish & Richardson plans to use STC as a platform where it can meet with clients and potential clients in East China.
