Ex-Amazon counsel establishes boutique IP firm

Amazon senior counsel Stephen Coates has left the online retailer to establish his own boutique IP firm, Coates IP.

In a Twitter post, Coates said it had been his “dream to launch a law firm boutique that provides sophisticated legal advice with a pragmatic in house perspective, melding my years of in house and big law experience”.

Coates has extensive experience in the digital and e-commerce sector, having served as Twitter’s first in-house IP counsel from 2014 to 2016.

He worked as senior counsel at Amazon with responsibility for trademarks and domain names from September 2016 until this month. That followed a prior stint at the Seattle-based company from 2011 to 2014.

Coates has also worked at law firms including Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton.

IP services offered by the new firm will include counselling and representation in the areas of trademarks, copyright, and domain names.
