Cloud company joins WIPO patent scheme

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has partnered with cloud-based analytics company PatSnap to support developing countries in their pursuit of innovation, by providing access to research and development analytics.

WIPO announced that PatSnap had joined its Access to Specialised Patent Information (ASPI) programme on Thursday, February 8.

Through the programme, launched in 2010, various offices and institutions in developing countries can receive free or low-cost access to tools and services that enable the retrieval and analysis of patent data.

The initiative currently has eight partners, including LexisNexis, which offer developing countries access to flagship patent database products.

PatSnap’s searchable dataset platform includes licensing and litigation data, economic data, patent valuation, and image and chemical formulas. It claims to have brought the world’s largest research and development dataset together, and is used by more than 3,000 organisations including NASA, Goodyear, and Vodafone.

As a partner, PatSnap will provide access to its research and development analytics platform, which containts insights into future technology changes and competitor strategy.

Yo Takagi, assistant director general of WIPO, said that PatSnap’s “user friendly search features and powerful analytics tools” will enable “critical insights into emerging trends” in developing countries.

Jeffrey Tiong, CEO of PatSnap, explained that the launch of the PatSnap Academy last year opened the “floodgates of innovation, by providing those with no knowledge of IP with a free platform to learn how to protect and pursue their ideas”.

He said that the partnership can “provide the necessary insight that can bring a largely untapped ocean of new ideas and inventions to the global marketplace”.
