Battistelli to succeed Campinos as training centre board chair
Benoît Battistelli, the current head of the European Patent Office (EPO), has been elected as chairman of the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies’ (CEIPI) administrative board.
CEIPI is a training centre for IP law specialists, based in Strasbourg, France.
He will succeed António Campinos, who has chaired the council since 2013. Battistelli was elected as chair for a three-year term.
CEIPI said that it “warmly thanks” Campinos for the support he has given to CEIPI since 2013, and addresses “warm congratulations and wishes of success” to Battistelli.
In a role-reversal of sorts, Campinos, who currently serves as the executive director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, will replace Battistelli as EPO president in July next year.
Commentators claimed that Campinos’s appointment signifies the EPO’s and Europe’s commitment to diversity, but others raised staff morale and discontent as issues that require addressing.
In later November, WIPR reported on an interview with Christoph Ernst, the chairman of the EPO’s Administrative Council, who stated that Battistelli’s tenure at the EPO has been “undoubtedly positive” but there has been a “heavy-handed approach”.
