Aimee Gessner

Aimee Gessner is a leading figure in global brand protection in the automotive sector. Based in Munich, she serves as senior legal counsel in the BMW Group’s Intellectual Property Law Department, where she oversees trademark prosecution and enforcement primarily in North America for the company’s principal vehicle brands: BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce.

With more than two decades of experience in BMW’s intellectual property team, Gessner has played a key role in protecting and strengthening some of the world’s most recognisable automotive brands. Her expertise extends beyond trademarks to design patents, copyright, software, trade secrets, IP licensing, domain name disputes, social media strategy, e-commerce enforcement, and anti-counterfeiting initiatives, both online and offline. Her work reflects the increasingly complex intersection of brand protection, digital commerce, and global consumer engagement.

Her practice has continually evolved to address the challenging IP issues arising from increasingly complex automotive technology and intensifying global competition.  Most recently, she has focused her efforts on defending BMW from aggressive third-party IP claims, such as a high-profile trade secret misappropriation claim concerning in-car infotainment technology before the US International Trade Commission.

Gessner is admitted as an attorney in New York and as a solicitor in England and Wales, and she is a foreign member of the Munich Chamber of Attorneys. She regularly represents BMW before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
