Bird & Bird to open first US office in mid-2018

Bird & Bird has revealed it is to open a representative office in San Francisco next year.

On Monday, October 2, the firm announced the move, which aims to “focus on building the firm’s presence in the region and providing US clients with non-US legal advice in their local time zone”.

It added in a statement that it will act as a platform partnering with US law firms “to provide global coverage for clients”.

Stefano Silvestri, partner and co-head of Bird & Bird’s international corporate group who is currently based in Milan, will join the San Francisco office.

He advises a number of Italian and international companies operating in the retail, consumer and life sciences sectors, as well as investment funds and other financial investors.

Nick Aries, IP partner who is currently based in London, will also relocate to San Francisco, “giving US clients greater access to Bird & Bird’s international expertise in the same time zone”.

He focuses his practice on IP disputes and advisory work, with a focus on trademarks, copyright and designs.

“This on-the-ground presence enables us to offer a heightened level of support to clients as they tackle these challenges head on,” said David Kerr, CEO of Bird & Bird.

“We’re looking forward to immersing ourselves in the local community in downtown San Francisco and being able to work much more closely with the companies driving innovation in the region,” he concluded.
