WBD expands ITC Section 337 litigation practice in Washington, DC

Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has hired Andrew Beverina to the firm’s patent prosecution and litigation practice group and IP litigation team in Washington, DC.

Beverina, who joins as of counsel, has more than two decades of trial and litigation experience in public and private practice, and focuses on patent litigation disputes before the US International Trade Commission (ITC) and in district courts.

Before joining WBD, he was a senior investigative attorney in the ITC’s office of unfair import investigation team.

During his career, he has been a representative on dozens of 337 investigations at the violation stage, in remand proceedings, enforcement proceedings, and 100-day proceedings.

These investigations involved utility patents (including standard-essential patents), trade secrets, trademarks, trade dress, and design patents.

He was lead counsel in multiple claim construction hearings and served as lead hearing/trial counsel in 10 trials involving patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation.

His experience spans a broad range of technologies, including crawler cranes, switch and router operating systems, vehicle camera mounts, flash memory, magnetic data tapes, and automotive motor assemblies.

“The addition of Andrew is an important milestone in the continued strategic growth of our IP litigation practice,” said Chris Mammen, who serves on the firm’s global board and leads the IP litigation group.

“His significant experience handling Section 337 investigations before the ITC and investigations involving a broad range of technologies will deepen our bench strength in Washington and across the firm’s footprint.”

Steve Levitan, IP litigation partner and leader of the firm’s ITC practice, added:

“Section 337 complaint filings are on the rise. This is because ITC remedies are powerful: the ITC can issue orders barring all infringing imports from entry into the US.

And ITC investigations are fast. They typically conclude within 18 months or less, much quicker than most district court cases.

“With his frontline ITC experience and background in IP litigation, Andrew brings a depth of highly relevant experience that will enable us to better serve our clients as they navigate the unique challenges presented by ITC litigation.”

Before joining the ITC, Beverina was a senior associate at Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt.

His practice focused on complex patent litigation for plaintiffs and defendants, including pre-trial investigations, discovery, preparation and examination of fact and expert witnesses, pre-trial motions, all aspects of trials, including examination of witnesses, and appellate work.

“Womble Bond Dickinson is a global firm well-known for its full-service IP capabilities. I am excited to join this distinguished group and contribute to the further growth of its ITC litigation practice,” said Beverina.
