View from the top: Anand Sharma, Finnegan
In the first edition of a new series featuring senior IP lawyers at the world’s top IP firms, Anand Sharma, managing partner of Finnegan, speaks to WIPR.
Sharing his three trends of 2022, Sharma reveals what he thinks will keep lawyers and rightsowners occupied over the year and why.
Sharma, who oversees more than 340 IP professionals across offices in the US, Asia, and Europe (most recently opening in Munich), suggests a mix of new and old topics.
His trends to watch are: subject matter eligibility, artificial intelligence, and non-fungible tokens.
On AI inventions, Sharma considered how the US Patent and Trademark Office will handle concepts of written description and enablement, plus issues over transparency.
"Many times when we are dealing with an AI invention, there's not transparency in exactly how the software is solving the problem... so we'll see either different standards for AI inventions, or that is going to be one of the hurdles."
