USPTO appoints deputy general counsel for IP
The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has picked Thomas Krause as its new deputy general counsel for IP law and solicitor.
In a statement yesterday, January 10, the USPTO said Krause will start the position on Monday, January 14. He replaces Joe Matal, who had been performing the role in an acting capacity.
Krause has been the agency’s deputy solicitor since 2014 and has worked in the Solicitor’s Office since 2002.
Andrei Iancu, director of the USPTO, said that by representing the agency in courts and providing advice on a host of issues and policies relevant to IP, the Solicitor’s Office plays a vital role in the US IP system.
“Tom is extremely well-qualified and understands the importance of reliable, predictable, and high-quality IP rights. I’m confident that his experience and expertise will serve our IP system well as he leads the Solicitor’s Office into the future,” he added.
Krause said he looks forward to leading this “extraordinary group of professionals and continuing the traditions of excellence set by my predecessors”.
Before joining the USPTO in 2002, Krause worked at law firm Covington & Burling, specialising in patent litigation and prosecution. Prior to his legal career, he served in the US Navy as an officer.
