Top 100 innovators generate $4tn in revenue, says report

Research company Clarivate Analytics has produced a report outlining 100 leading innovators and showing that together the firms generated $4 trillion in revenue in 2015.

Clarivate, formerly the IP and science business of Thomson Reuters, announced the results of its report, called “2016 Top 100 Global Innovators”, yesterday, January 10.

The report’s methodology centres on patent volume, application-to-grant success, and globalisation, among others.

Those listed in the report include Amazon, Bayer, InterDigital, Philips, Microsoft and Nike.

Clarivate hosted a webcast yesterday with Gordon McComber, global head of operations, and Ellen Pinschmidt, global head, IP innovation and applied sciences at the company.

McComber said: “The list of this year’s winners represents some of the most successful organisations in the world when it comes to developing ideas, protecting them and ultimately achieving commercial success with them.”

Pinschmidt added: “We have used our expertise and domain knowledge to create a quantative unbiased assessment of the outcome of patent innovation through our metric-given calculations.”

According to Pinschmidt, the report found that the top 100 innovators generated more than $4 trillion in revenue in 2015 and spent more than $227 billion on research and development.

“Among our winners, there is a fascinating shift from quantity to quality; all of us probably know that the number of patents filed globally grows exponentially, but the trend for our winners is fewer inventions filed this year,” she said.

She added that the patent grant ratio has increased.

Brian Hinman, chief IP officer at Philips, said: “I think innovation is a catalyst of growth and that goes with Philips ... with any company that wants to develop distinguishing products and services that are innovative in the world.”

Jay Nadler, CEO of Clarivate, said in a release: “We believe the power of innovation is a fundamental driver of economic well-being, competitive advantage and success, which represents the heart of our business—to accelerate the pace of innovation.”
