South Korean university files patent suit over 3D technology
A South Korean university has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against a US-based 3D smart sensor company.
Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) filed its suit against LMI Technologies at the US District Court for the Northern District of California on Sunday, December 4.
The suit centres on US patent number 7,957,639, titled “Method and system for determining optimal exposure of a structured light based 3D camera”, which was registered at the US Patent and Trademark Office in June 2011.
Sukhan Lee, Moon Wook Ryu, and Dae Sik Kim are the inventors of the ‘639 patent, and Lee works as a director of the Intelligent Systems Research Institute at the university.
SKKU is the owner of the patent.
In its claim, the university said that LMI infringed its patent through the HDI 100 Series and HDI Advance products.
The products cover 3D scanners which capture digital 3D scans from real-world objects. They are targeted at manufacturers working in “industrial metrology applications”, research labs and for academic institutions which need “complex” 3D measurements.
SKKU is asking for injunctive relief, damages, costs, pre- and post-judgment interest, and a jury trial.
Hao Ni, attorney at law firm Ni, Wang and Massand and representative of SKKU, told WIPR that the firm can't comment on pending litigation on behalf of the university.
