Sisvel launches patent pool for digital TV standard
IP management company Sisvel announced yesterday the launch of a joint licensing programme for patents essential to the DVB-S2X standard.
DVB-S2X is a technical standard that was developed by the Digital Video Broadcasting Project. It is an extension of the DVB-S2, which is a digital TV broadcast standard.
Both standards have been adopted by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute.
The licensing programme was launched with a portfolio of standard-essential patents (SEPs) owned or controlled by several organisations, including the European Space Agency and Hughes Network Systems.
Under the programme, Sisvel offers a royalty-bearing, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence for patents essential to the DVB-S2X standard.
According to Sisvel, the portfolio licence makes DVB-S2X patents more easily accessible and ensures that all users will benefit from transparency and convenience of licence terms.
“Sisvel and the patent owners have made a consistent effort to launch the DVB-S2X licensing programme at this early stage of the technology adoption, thus providing the market with certainty and predictability for the cost of a licence,” commented Davide Ferri, CEO of Sisvel and Sisvel Technology.
Mattia Fogliacco, CEO of the Sisvel Group, added that the European Commission has previously expressed support for patent pools and licensing platforms to address many of the SEP licensing challenges, such as providing clarity on fees.
“Sisvel is fully aligned with this statement and is confident that this new programme will promote a rapid adoption of the DVB-S2X standard,” he said.
Sisvel is encouraging parties with patents that they believe to be essential to the DVB-S2X standard to submit them for an evaluation of essentiality.
