Qualcomm grants multimode patent licence to Vietnamese company

Qualcomm has granted a royalty-bearing patent licence to VinSmart, the technology unit of Vietnamese consumer conglomerate  Vingroup.

The semiconductor company  announced the multimode global patent licence agreement on Thursday, December 13.

As part of the agreement, VinSmart—which was established in June—will gain the right to Qualcomm’s “breakthrough technologies” covered in the semiconductor company’s “broad patent portfolio for the development of complete multimode terminals”.

Multimode terminals enable data retrieval in mobile communications, supporting the device’s mobility across wireless networks.

The patent agreement gives VinSmart the right to develop, manufacture, and sell branded “multimode complete terminals”, including 4G and 5G smartphones.

John Han, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing, said: “Qualcomm is pleased to enter into this landmark agreement with VinSmart.

“With access to our diverse and ever-expanding technology patent portfolio, VinSmart will now be able to develop and market compelling 3G/4G/5G devices powered by Qualcomm’s leading mobile technologies both in Vietnam and abroad.”

VinSmart will pay royalties based on Qualcomm’s branded multimode licensing framework.

Vingroup is the largest private conglomerate in Vietnam, with eight business segments covering technology, industrial products, property, hospitality and entertainment, consumer retail, healthcare, and education and agriculture.

According to the companies, the agreement will benefit Vietnam’s economic development.

Nguyen Viet Quang, vice chairman and CEO of Vingroup, said: “The strategic agreement with Qualcomm will accelerate VinSmart’s vision to be the next significant smart device company in the world.

“In addition to the agreement, we will leverage Qualcomm’s innovative technologies to develop an ecosystem of electronic devices and smart solutions based on cutting-edge technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence, which will  provide a comfortable and modern life for the people of Vietnam.”

On the same day that the agreement was announced, VinSmart launched four Vsmart-branded mobile phones as part of the company’s “aggressive expansion into the smart electronic devices space”.

Viet Quang said: “The collaborative synergy with Qualcomm will offer significant value to Vingroup’s plan to become an international-standards technology-industry-service conglomerate by 2028.”
