Kavanaugh sworn in as Supreme Court justice
Brett Kavanaugh, US President Donald Trump’s controversial nominee for the US Supreme Court, was sworn in on Saturday, October 6.
The US Senate backed his nomination by 50 votes to 48.
Kavanaugh has replaced Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced in June that he would step down after three decades at the court and obtain senior status.
Since being nominated by Trump in July this year, Kavanaugh has faced claims of sexual assault, which he has denied.
On Thursday, October 4, the FBI published its report on the sexual misconduct allegations. Senators took turns to read the single copy of the report.
Kavanaugh served as a judge at the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for 12 years. He has authored more than 300 opinions, including 11 that have been affirmed by the Supreme Court.
Before becoming a judge, Kavanaugh served in the George W Bush administration, holding roles including senior associate counsel and assistant to the President and staff secretary.
