Jury sides with Apple in $30m patent suit
Apple will not have to pay $30 million in royalties to a technology licensing company which accused it of infringing two of its patents.
Yesterday, April 4, a jury at the US District Court for the District of Delaware found Apple had not infringed the patents, which are owned by Evolved Wireless.
The patents in dispute (US numbers 7,809,373 and 7,881,236) relate to long-term evolution (LTE) wireless communication systems. Evolved Wireless had accused Apple of using the patented technology in its smartphones.
In Evolved Wireless’ original complaint, it asked the court to grant it “a reasonable royalty” for the alleged use of the technology.
According to the filing, Evolved Wireless sent Apple a letter offering to engage in licencing discussions for the portfolio, but Apple refused.
The latest victory for Apple comes less than a month after another US court ordered Apple to pay $31m to Qualcomm, after a jury concluded it had infringed three of its patents.
