IP5 establishes AI taskforce

IP5, a forum consisting of the world’s five largest patent offices, is to establish a task force focused on improving the global patent system in response to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

IP5 comprises the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the US Patent and Trademark Office, the European Patent Office (EPO), the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO), and the Japan Patent Office.

IP5 held its annual meeting in Incheon, South Korea yesterday, June 13.

The meeting was attended by the heads of the five member offices and Francis Gurry, secretary general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Following the summit, IP5 issued a joint declaration focused largely on how to improve cooperation between international patent offices in the face of the rapid emergence of new technologies such as AI.

According to the EPO press release, IP5 will establish a dedicated New Emerging Technologies/Artificial Intelligence Task Force in order to explore future joint initiatives to respond to the technology.

KIPO chair Pak Won-joo, who chaired the meeting, said that the joint declaration showed that IP5 was responding successfully to “the challenges of a rapidly changing technology environment” (translated from Korean).

The meeting also agreed to work more closely in harmonising the global patent system, particularly in the areas of unity of invention, citation of prior art and written description/sufficiency of disclosure.

According to IP5, the purpose of the forum is to “improve the efficiency of the examination process for patents worldwide”.

Its next annual meeting will be hosted by SIPO in 2020.
