IBM patents blockchain data privacy solution for self-driving vehicles
International Business Machines (IBM) has filed its latest blockchain patent, this time for a system that uses the technology to allow self-driving vehicles (SDVs) to predict the behaviour of human drivers.
That patent (US number 10,252,145), which was published by the US Patent and Trademark Office on April 9, outlines a system using distributed ledger technology to ensure the privacy and validity of information SDVs receive from their on-board sensors about nearby vehicles and drivers.
This information will help SDVs analyse and predict human behaviour and avoid potential accidents.
According to the patent, the “sensors incorporated in the driver's vehicle can collect, detect and identify information about the driver's behavior in real time” and upload this information onto a cloud data hub, to which the SDV can subscribe to.
The patent also notes that the system would only allow authorised entities to access the data.
An authorised SDV will then access the predicted behaviour of nearby human drivers in real time by scanning, for example, a nearby licence plate, bringing up information stored in the blockchain.
