Ericsson and Intellectual Ventures agree to end patent suits
Ericsson and IP licensing company Intellectual Ventures have agreed to settle all patent infringement lawsuits between the two.
Announced today, June 10, the licensing agreement includes the settlement of a suit that went to trial earlier this year and resulted in a $43 million jury verdict for Intellectual Ventures.
In February, a jury at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas concluded that telecoms companies T-Mobile and Ericsson had infringed three Intellectual Ventures patents used for wireless services for the long-term evolution network.
While the terms of the licensing agreement are confidential, Ericsson has confirmed that it expects a negative impact on operating income in its networks segment in the current quarter.
“Since 2012, Intellectual Ventures has filed a number of patent infringement lawsuits against Ericsson and its customers in the US and Europe seeking injunctions and monetary damages,” said the announcement from Ericsson.
Ericsson’s IP portfolio includes more than 49,000 granted patents worldwide and, according to the company, it is the largest holder of standard essential patents for mobile communication.
