EIP restructures its practice

EIP, a patent law firm based in London, has restructured its practice groups to better reflect modern industry and technology, the firm announced in November 2010.

The firm’s six new practice groups are now industry and service-specific. The digital, green, life and brands practices are joined by the strategy and search practices.

Traditionally, EIP has specialised in the electronics industry, and the capabilities of the new practice groups—especially those of the digital practice— have existed previously.

The restructuring is partly due to attorney hires throughout 2010. These included Alice Mastrovito as head of the trademarks, copyright and designs practice, Neil Forsyth as head of the green practice and Andy Sharples as head of the life practice.

Jerome Spaargaren, the founding partner of EIP, said: “EIP Digital has always been the main practice group. The old structure didn’t present a drawback as such, [but] we felt that clients didn’t understand the breadth of the services we offered.”

He added: “[The green practice] has been brought about mainly by the fast-track service for green-tech patent applications [offered by the UK Intellectual Property Office]. We are taking advantage of that by offering the service to our clients.”
