Celanese sues Chinese rival over patent for artificial sweetener ‘200% sweeter than sugar’

Global chemical company Celanese has taken legal action against a Chinese manufacturer of high-potency sweeteners that is allegedly infringing one of its patents.

In its  announcement yesterday, October 15, Celanese said it had filed a patent infringement claim against Anhui Jinhe Industrial for the “unlawful manufacture and sale” of its acesulfame potassium sweetener.

Anhui Jinhe’s sweetener allegedly infringes Celanese’s Chinese patent (Chinese number 10,441,1693,B) which is directed to improve production processes for making Celanese’s acesulfame potassium sweetener, Sunett.

According to the release, Sunett is 200-times sweeter than sugar, zero-calorie and dental-friendly.

Celanese said the patent provides “substantial technology advantages” that are recognised as exclusive to the company.

Tom Kelly, senior vice president of engineered materials at Celanese, said: “As the inventor and only western producer of Sunett, Celanese has developed a series of best practices to deliver one of the industry’s highest quality artificial sweeteners, ensuring product purity, supply reliability and product accountability,

Kelly said the company will vigorously defend its patented technology against “unlawful manufacturing, importing, purchasing, selling, or use of proprietary technologies in the US, Europe, China and globally”.
