BlackBerry continues patent suing spree in US

BlackBerry has sued a second US company for patent infringement just weeks after filing a patent infringement lawsuit against technology company Avaya.

The company filed two complaints at the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, accusing mobile manufacturer Blu Products of infringing 15 of BlackBerry’s patents.

The complaints, filed on Tuesday, August 16, claim that Blu Products has used Blackberry’s proprietary technology in a number of products, including mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, and software for mobile communication devices.

“As a result of its infringement, Blu has earned substantial revenue selling 2G, 3G, and LTE-compliant products that use BlackBerry’s technology,” the complaint said.

BlackBerry said that it had offered Blu a licence on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms but the firm had never responded.

BlackBerry is seeking damages and an ongoing royalty for any post-verdict infringement, payable on each product or service offered by Blu that is found to infringe the patents.

Earlier this month, BlackBerry sued Avaya in a patent infringement lawsuit that accused the company of infringing eight of its patents. The patents are directed to technologies including methods for displaying messages, tracking devices for mobiles and call-routing methods.
