Ballard Spahr recruits new partner

US-based law firm Ballard Spahr LLP has expanded its IP team with the addition of James Sze as partner.

He will be based in the San Diego office of the firm, established in 2010. Prior to his appointment, Sze was partner at Duane Morris LLP and an engineer at wireless technology company Qualcomm.

Sze has represented companies in the financial and technology sectors in a range of domestic and international patent disputes. His focus is on electrical and technology patents, advising companies on patent protection and enforceability.

“With its entrepreneurial mindset, Ballard Spahr LLP is known for having an IP practice that can serve a full range of client needs,” Sze said. “I am excited to have the opportunity to build an IP transactional and litigation practice in California.”

Mitchell Katz, chair of the firm’s IP department, said: “Electrical engineering and computer science technologies represent some of the most significant growth areas in patent litigation and patent prosecution.

“James has a considerable talent as an IP strategist in these industries, and he brings significant client relationships that will help us realise the tremendous potential we see for IP work on the West Coast,” he added.
