Amazon sues over ‘false’ job offers

Amazon is suing an Illinois-based web marketing company and an Israeli businessman, alleging that they falsely offered “work at home opportunities” with the tech corporation.

According to the lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington on Wednesday, April 10, First Impression Interactive used Amazon’s brand name in unsolicited voicemails to potential customers.

First Impression’s prerecorded voicemails claimed to be on behalf of a recruiter for Amazon, and advertised a salary of $27.50 an hour, Amazon alleged.

The voicemails directed “victims” to First Impression-controlled domains which “unlawfully used Amazon’s brand”, the complaint said.

Amazon claimed that when users tried to access these domains, they were redirected to a website controlled by an affiliate of First Impression.

Roy Oron, an Israeli-based businessman who purchased redirected traffic from this affiliate in order to sell web services, was named as a defendant in the suit.

Amazon said that he directed users to a website which used Amazon’s trademarks and displayed fake quotes from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

The website also falsely offered “work from home opportunities” with Amazon, the complaint said.

Users were offered to pay a “small enrolment fee” for the opportunity to make $500 a day working from home from Amazon.

The Seattle-based tech company has accused First Impression and its owners for false advertising and cybersquatting. Amazon is also suing Oron for trademark infringement, false designation of origin and trademark dilution.

Amazon is seeking a permanent injunction preventing the defendants from any further use of its marks. The company is also seeking maximum damages and attorneys’ fees.

WIPR has contacted First Impression and Roy Oron for comment in response to the allegations.
